Maverick Day is the Head Coach of Muay Thai and the founder of the Top Gun Muay Thai affiliation. In 2017, Maverick relocated from Cairns to Brisbane and in the spring of 2022, founded Ground Zero Gym together with Gürkan Baydogan.

Since Maverick could walk, he has been immersed in Muay Thai, thanks to his father, Ronald Day (Ron). Mavericks’ family owned and operated the Cairns Quest Centre, where Ron was the Head Coach and is one of the most renowned Muay Thai coaches in Northern Queensland. Since Maverick was four, Ron has been an inspirational mentor, paving the way for Maverick to compete professionally and pursue coaching as a profession which began at 16 teaching the Kids Comp Classes at his family’s gym.

In October 2022, Maverick made his mark in Australia as one of the youngest coaches to mould a student into a competitive fighter winning the 2022 WBC Queensland Championship (Female Featherweight).

His achievements as a coach didn’t stop there. Not only has Maverick had a Level 2 National Accreditation since 2018, he has also competed as a Muay Thai fighter at the kid, teen and adult levels, fighting against some of Queensland’s best fighters. On top of all of these achievements, Maverick accomplished all of this before he was 22.

Gürkan Baydogan is an IBJJF-certified Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) first-degree black belt, promoted by Isaac Indart under Tito Beltran of Crazy Team. Originally from Berlin, Germany, Gürkan moved to Brisbane in June 2021. In 2022, he co-founded Ground Zero Gym with Maverick Day, where he now serves as the Head Coach for BJJ, NoGi, and MMA.

For nearly 30 years, Gürkan has been immersed in martial arts, beginning with Wing Chun Kung-Fu and Muay Thai before discovering grappling, a passion that led him to open one of Berlin’s most prominent martial arts academies, Spitfire Gym, in 2013. Since opening Spitfire, Gürkan has worked extensively as both a grappling and MMA coach, as well as a fight manager, guiding numerous athletes to success across Europe and on the world stage. After relocating to Spain in 2019, Gürkan later passed ownership of Spitfire Gym to a long-time student and friend, ensuring its continued growth, and became an affiliate of Crazy Team.

Not only is Gürkan a highly technical coach, he is also a seasoned competitor, earning multiple championships throughout his ongoing BJJ journey.

Drew’s martial arts journey began in 2015 at age 11. He started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in September 2017, but by late 2019, he had discovered his true passion for Muay Thai and hadn’t looked back. Drew is focused on competing as a professional fighter and is committed to perfecting his skills. Since 2018, he has also been assisting and coaching classes, becoming a qualified coach in 2019 and is our Assistant Coach of Muay Thai.

Dominic is a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and originates from Townsville. Dominic relocated to Brisbane in 2021 and is one of our coaches for BJJ and NoGi. His journey into BJJ started in June 2016 when he was training in Muay Thai and was persuaded by a teammate to try a BJJ class. After this experience, he hasn’t looked back and delved deeper into understanding BJJ from a teaching perspective so he could coach and he has been coaching since 2020.

Corban is our Women’s Muay Thai coach and a professional Muay Thai fighter. She began her training in 2018 under Maverick after trying a ‘box-fit’ class, which sparked her interest in combat sports and led her to Muay Thai. She had her first fight in early 2019, competed as an amateur until 2021, and turned professional in 2022. In October 2022, Corban won the WBC Queensland State Title.

Outside of Muay Thai, Corban is a Remedial Massage Therapist and Pilates instructor and runs The Recharge Room, where she helps athletes improve recovery, movement, and performance. With this expertise, she incorporates strength, mobility, and fun into her Muay Thai classes, fostering a comfortable environment for women in what can often feel like an intimidating sport.
